Digg.com a socially rated news site is one of my favorite sites to visit, but when it comes to my own submissions whether personal or global content I find myself being the underDogg..
So how can a little fish make it to the Digg homepage if they are not a major player in entertainment, news or the blogosphere? Digg homepages have eluded me for months and are starting to feel off limits unless you are part of the private elite ‘Club Digg’. Ok, maybe it's not that dire but I would like to think I and many others have a fairly solid idea of what constitutes a Digg front page article yet our submissions always fall short. We just don’t have enough grunt to be seen. I am a news junkie and spend time daily perusing and enjoying breaking news. Yet somehow my interesting finds get blown out of the water by yet another "HDR Image" of a major city or another "Microwaving / blending x does x". My best Digg to date is a measly 10 Diggs. I even recently started a new account on Digg for a fresh start; maybe I can re-invent myself and make some progress! This is not to say I am miserable with my time on Digg, maybe just overly jealous of some of those top Diggers out there. Making it to the homepage is a challenge but the process also has an element of excitement and fun. One could say trying to make it to the Digg homepage is Adiggtive. If I must be a Digg bench warmer then I can live with that and I will continue to enjoy a great site. Is there a solution to this? I would suggest Digg tweak their system to give us small fish a better chance. What I have in mind would be 3 tabs: Popular Stories – 2nd Chance - Upcoming Stories. The "2nd Chance" section would be new and use a special algorithm listing articles from 'upcoming stories' that are dugg more quickly than others'. For example if you have an article that generates 10 diggs in less than 2 minutes it will still be stuck in 'upcoming stories' and in a few more minutes drift off the page to die a slow death stuck at 12 diggs. However, if you get 10 diggs in less than 2 minutes does this not show your article has some promise? It could then be visible in the '2nd Chance' tab and you'll end up with a second chance to keep your diggs increasing. Who knows, maybe if this gets enough diggs such a code tweak would be implemented for us underDoggs. On the other hand I’m probably looking at 8 diggs and disappearing forever :’(

The "Hot in ___" sidebar is exactly what you're calling 2nd chance. Stories in Upcoming with high Digg velocity make it to the Upcoming sidebar, and often get enough exposure to make it to the front page.
Getting to the front page is easy... you just have to be a little more unethical:

I think you also have to be an active person in other digg stories. Such as commenting a lot. Commenting in other stories will sometimes make people friend you. Once they have you on there friends list they will see what you are submitting and give you a Digg.

What are you complaining about! You're '12 second cure for hiccups' has 810 diggs right now!
